Fermented Ingredients in Skincare: Bizzare or Revolutionary?
We’re wise to the benefits of fermented foods for gut health; now Antipodes are harnessing the powers of fermented ingredients to reap the benefits in skincare. I know what you're thinking - it sounds strange right? But bare with us! Trust me, it's worth it.

Antipodes have released 2 brand new products harnessing the power of high-tech ferments for healthy, clear skin. But before we dive into what these products are about, let's start with a little bit of background.

Antipodes is New Zealand’s Scientific Green Beauty brand, "uniting science with nature to create high-performance, plant-powered skincare from the world’s purest pollution-free ingredients". Recognised internationally by big brands such as Vogue, Allure, Elle - and used by celebs such as Cara Delevingne, Billie Eilish, Katie Holmes etc - The brand is taking the world by storm and it's very clear why. As a brand, they're setting the standard for not only sustainability, but also for natural skincare products that work.

FACT: THE SKIN IS THE BODY'S LARGEST ORGAN.

This is something most of us probably already know, but it's easy to forget when you're tempted by a hot new cosmetics product! (Don't worry, I'm also guilty of this). Once that sinks in though, it's easy to get freaked out about what you put on your skin.

... So here's why I not only trust Antipodes new probiotic skincare range, but I'm super hyped about it! Now - first of all, Antipodes uses natural (& cruelty free) ingredients and about 95% of that is organically sourced. Even their hyaluronic acid is sourced from plants. & get this: Plant-based Hyaluronic Acid is extracted from microbial fermentation. So, if you've used plant-based hyaluronic acid products, you've already tried fermented ingredients in your skincare regimen.

Now this isn't to say that you should *only* use natural skincare... Because there are many brands that aren't 100% natural and are absolutely amazing skincare brands! I'm just saying you should think about it before you slap any ol' product on your face.

"The fermented ingredients used in our Calm & Clear formulations increase good bacteria at the expense of unwanted bad bacteria. The result: a thriving microbiome and healthy, balanced skin."

MY FIRST IMPRESSIONS:
I don't know about you, but for me - texture, wearability and fragrance are all key components to the way I experience a product. Both the Flora Mask & the Credo Serum felt lightweight on my skin and didn't leave a greasy residue. The mask has quite a fluffy texture and the serum has a slight shimmer when wet, but as it absorbs (unlike other products) that shimmer disappears and leaves a subtle, natural glow.

COSMOS CERTIFIED FRAGRANCES:

One thing to look out for when shopping "natural products", is how the brand has described the fragrances used. Many brands hide any harmful ingredients used in their scents by blanketing them under the generic term "parfum" or "fragrance" in their ingredients description.

However, Antipodes values the fact that your skin is your biggest organ & it deserves only the best skin-loving ingredients. So they've taken care in their choices right down to the fragrances used.

The COSMOS certified fragrance for the mask embodies a bouquet of wild rose and lavender. While the COSMOS certified fragrance for the serum is of fresh apple. If you're not usually a fan of floral fragrances, don't worry - they're not overpowering at all!

The fresh fragrances are subtle enough that they don't overwhelm you, but fragrant enough to leave you feeling fancy. I honestly usually hate the smell of lavender in anything. Doesn't matter if it's air freshener, sanitiser, perfume etc... I have absolutely no tolerance for it as a scent. However, I really enjoyed the fragrance in this mask. I'm no connoisseur of fragrances... But in my opinion it had more of a musky/spicy vibe with a slight hint of floral.
DOWN TO THE SCIENCE:
So, probiotics in skincare? Yay or Nay?

We already know that Antipodes backs all of their claims with science. With this launch, Antipodes did an in-vivo trial with 45 women aged 18-65 and let the results speak for themselves.

The fermented ingredients are more concentrated (therefore more potent), they improve the penetration of active ingredients and enhance product longevity for natural products. Ideal for sensitive skin, the fermented ingredients are also anti-inflammatory while attracting and retaining moisture for enhanced hydration.

Flora: Probiotic Skin-Rescue Hyaluronic Mask

The Flora Mask features a unique non-live probiotic called Kalibiome Sensitive, clinically shown to calm redness and inflammation, and protect the skin barrier against pollutants which can cause irritation.

Flora also contains plant hyaluronic acid, to keep skin super fresh, and New Zealand harakeke flax gel – sometimes called “the Rolls Royce of aloe vera gels” because of its ability to soothe and hydrate the skin.

Who's it for? This mask works with all skin types - especially when blemished, sensitive, or stressed! After only 12 hours, 89% of people felt their skin was smoother and softer* After only 12 hours, 91% of people felt their skin was more hydrated*

Credo: Probiotic Ferment Revitalise Serum
Credo is a must-have for stressed and blemished skin! If you suffer from hormonal breakouts or have skin that is generally stressed, this is your new daily go-to. The serum features high-tech fermented ingredients and probiotics to balance, clear, and hydrate temperamental skin, including: Kalibiome AGE probiotic – supports collagen and hydration for plumped, bouncy skin Bamboo and kombucha – cultivate good bacteria to maintain healthy skin function Bakuchiol – a natural retinol alternative that helps to smooth fine lines Plant hyaluronic acid – to hydrate the skin

So who’s it for? Anyone suffering from hormonal breakouts, dehydrated skin and skin that is generally stressed, dull and tired. After only 12 hours, 67% of people felt their skin was clearer and more even* After only 12 hours, 84% of people felt their skin was smoother and softer*
