What's The Deal with Vitamin C?
We've all heard about Vitamin C before, right? While it's not scientifically proven to prevent or cure a cold, it is important in fighting off infections. There are many different forms of Vitamin C but they all work toward the same goal of healthy looking skin. Vitamin C works with your skin cells to encourage collagen production while also helping to break down pigmentation. Vitamin C (ascorbic acid) is an antioxidant (it is considered one of the best antioxidants in skincare) and helps to prevent damage caused by free radicals.

Bare with me, we're about to get a little sciencey. You may ask, "how can we avoid free radicals so this damage isn't caused?" and in short, we can't but let me explain why.

We are surrounded by free radicals in our every day life, our body even produces them. Free radicals are most commonly nitrogen or oxygen atoms with an unpaired electron. Electrons don't like to be unpaired and so will quickly steal an electron from the closest stable molecule and in doing so, causing damage to it's molecular structure. In very simple terms, this molecular damage is responsible for a big part of the ageing process. Antioxidants help to keep free radicals under a bit of control, they're able to give free radicals an electron without becoming destabilised which helps to stop the free radical chain reaction.
Now before you go and bathe in orange juice with a face mask made up of crushed Vitamin C tablets while drinking a Vitamin C packed juice, let's talk about the most beneficial way to go about this.

Vitamin C is responsible for hundreds of different processes in the body. There are three that are of more interest to us:
- It helps to regulate the synthesis of collagen.
- It's a natural photoprotectant and helps to shield the skin against oxidative stress and free radical damage.
- It inhibits the formation of melanin in the skin.

Vitamin C in our skin is rapidly lost through exposure to UV rays. Of course taking Vit C tablets and eating foods in Vitamin C will help but only to an extent. Remember that it's responsible for hundreds of other processes and that in the bodys organ rating system the skin is far less important than organs like the heart and brain. There's also a few not so pleasant side effects of having too much vitamin c in your system like nausea, insomnia and diarrhea.
This is where skincare comes in. By giving your skin its own source of Vitamin C through topical applications delivered in a stable formulation you will see even more improvements in your skin. Vit C in it's purest form (L-Ascorbic Acid) can be quite unstable. The presence of water will immediately begin to oxidise the Vit C and once this has started the effectiveness will begin to decline and can even become a pro-oxidant - meaning it can form free radicals itself. This has the opposite results to what we most of us want.. it can increase signs of ageing. When Vit C becomes unstable it can often turn products yellow, which is a sign you should stop using the product.

Lucky for you, we have a few different Vitamin C products on the site. A couple of them are even waterless formulas making them more beneficial and give you more bang for your buck.

Waterless Formulas:
- Medik8 C-Tetra+ Intensive
- Medik8 C-Tetra Serum
- Medik8 C-Tetra Eye
- The Ordinary Vitamin C Suspension in Silicone

Other Formulas:
- Medik8 Daily Radiance Vitamin C
- Medik8 C-Tetra Cream
- The Ordinary Magnesium Ascorbyl Phosphate 10%
- Revolution Skincare 3% Vitamin C Serum

While Vit C does provide our skin with oxidative protection it is NOT a replacement for SPF. Please use the two of them together. Apply your Vit C first and then follow with your SPF products.

Also remember that everyones skin is different. Do your research before you buy a product, don't buy something just because it worked for someone else.

Till next time,
